Selection of new residents in any training program is a complex process which requires critical assessment of the academic and personal characteristics of the applicants. Various selection procedures are available. The procedure, which should be adopted, should be the one which is able to identify the characteristics or personality traits which are responsible for success or failure during residency training. The first question to be asked is: who do we need? Specifying the person required for a particular job requires considerable skills. The final decision to select any trainee is based on the sum of 50% achievement of his performance in medical school and demonstrating general medical knowledge in pre-entrance examination (20% weight on medical school graduation marks & 30% weight on pre-entrance exam score) and 50% on the suitability for training in family medicine and personality characteristics which are taken from group exercise and personal interview by the selection panel. This process will lead in ranking the applicants for admission to the Family Practice Residency Program (FPRP).
Eligibility for applying in the Residency Program:
order to be eligible, the applicant has to fulfill the following requirements:
- Has Bahraini Nationality.
- Is qualified and is graduated from an accredited medical school.
- Successfully passed the Bahrain Licensure Examination of the Ministry of Health.
- Completed one year of Internship training in a teaching hospital.
- Applicants who are working in various hospital departments and primary care centers should have a release (no objection letter) from the respective departments.
The selection process is composed of three elements:
- Identifying Personnel Specifications:
In specifying, the qualities required in a trainee resident, it's helpful to identify the characteristics of the needed person who will undergo residency training. These characteristics can be classified based on desirable and undesirable qualities that are needed for various components of training to become a competent Family Physician.
- Collecting the needed Information:
The needed information pertinent to each applicant is taken from the following sources:
The selection process is supervised by representative from the Directorate of Personnel of Ministry of Health. The members will use specially designed selection interview forms.
- Application Form.
The information in this form identifies applicant’s attainments during under-graduate and post-graduate period. This will include his/her performance during medical education. Other data includes personal profile, general interests and basic information needed for registration.
- Group Exercises:
The candidates are divided into small groups; each group will be given certain task to work on. The supervisors will evaluate the content and the process of the group activity. The group exercises are basically designed to identify applicant’s personality character, interactive dynamics, communicating and interpersonal skills.
- Pre-entrance Written Examination:
The pre-entrance written examination is in the form of multiple choice questions (MCQs). It will test candidate’s basic medical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and judgment ability to various situations.
- Personal Interview:
The personnel interview will be carried out by the selection interview committee. This committee is formed by members representing the following organizations:
- Chairman of the program & Head of Primary Care Medical Education
- Primary Care Medical Services (COMS)
- Secondary Care Medical Education (SMC)
- FPRP tutor (1)
- FPRP tutor (2)
A numerical system will be used whereby each candidate is rated for each part of the specification, comparing applicant’s current profile with the ideal profile identified by the program (favorable Vs. non favorable criteria). A score of 1 is given to the area which does not match the required specification, while a score of 5 is given to the area which fully matches the required specification with no doubt.
The Selection Interview form will be used to document individual applicant’s achievement. This form will contain information obtained from the application form. The Selection Interview form B will be used to compare applicant's achievement with the rest of the group. Applying this structured approach ensures that all-important areas are covered and that information relevant to the selection decision can be collected.
- Taking the Final Decision:
After filling the selection interview forms, the interview coordinator will collect the selection interview form from the committee members and will sum them up in one form for final decision.
